Camo Hat

A couple of weeks before my husband left for his hunting/camping trip we were walking around Michael’s, shopping for a birthday present and I found the perfect camoflauge-colored yarn for a hat for him. It is Patons Classic Wool Merino  and the color is called Forest. Here is the first one I finished:

Please excuse the crappy picture, but the only camera that wasn’t packed were our cell phone cameras. I used the Seaman’s Cap pattern that I found through Ravelry. I ended up making two of these hats in about 7 days because my father-in-law liked it so much he asked for one too. Since he has absolutly no hair on his head I couldn’t tell him no. I was feverishly knitting hats up until the night before they left.

My intentional modification to the pattern was using size 5 and size 6 needles because that was what I had on hand when I decided to start the first hat. It didn’t make much of a difference in the size of the hat at all. (And no, I didn’t check the gauge. It’s a bad habit I have.) My unintentional modifications, made by me not paying attention to the pattern are as follows:

1) I did a 2×2 rib rather than 1×2 – again didn’t make a difference in the way either hat came out. I didn’t realize I’d missed that part of the pattern until I was finishing up the second hat.
2) On the first hat I read the pattern as knitting 17 more rounds before switching to the larger needles rather than repeating round 1 7 more times and then switching to the larger needles.

Proof that I shouldn’t watch something that take too much attention while I’m knitting and maybe I should wait to have a glass of wine until after I’ve gotten to all knit stitches. Oh well. Both guys liked the hats and for anyone who doesn’t knit or know the pattern will never be able to tell 🙂 This was one of the only projects I’ve ever finished knowing there was a mistake somewhere in it and I didn’t obsess over it and eventually rip it out and start all over. I’m growing as a knitter!

The hat looks great and honestly? It is just a plain old cap with ribbing – you can’t go wrong with those!

  2. Hi there

This was just what I needed for a little boy who has the same birthday as mine. Thank you so much. I have put a link on my blog to this page.
